May-Thurner syndrome: an overview

May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is a vascular condition in which the right iliac artery compresses the left iliac vein against the spine, restricting blood flow. This compression increases the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the left leg due to the pooling of blood and clot formation. MTS often presents with symptoms like leg swelling, pain, and venous insufficiency.

In severe cases, untreated May-Thurner syndrome can lead to significant complications, including chronic venous hypertension and post-thrombotic syndrome. Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial for managing the condition effectively. At St. Louis Vascular Surgical Specialists, patients receive expert care with advanced diagnostic tools and personalized treatment plans to address the unique challenges of May-Thurner syndrome.

Potential symptoms of May-Thurner syndrome:

  • Unilateral leg swelling, typically on the left side
  • Pain or tenderness in the affected leg, especially when standing or walking
  • Visible varicose veins or vein engorgement
  • A feeling of heaviness or fatigue in the leg
  • Skin discoloration or ulcers in severe cases
  • Recurrent deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
  • Chronic venous insufficiency, which leads to persistent swelling and discomfort

Personalized vascular treatment options at SVSS

At St. Louis Vascular Surgical Specialists (SVSS), personalized care for May-Thurner syndrome begins with a thorough evaluation by Dr. Robert Hacker, our board-certified vascular surgeon. After reviewing your symptoms and medical history, Dr. Hacker will use advanced imaging techniques like duplex ultrasound or venography to precisely assess the degree of vein compression and any associated complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, Dr. Hacker will develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your condition. This plan may include thrombolysis to dissolve existing clots, angioplasty to expand the narrowed vein, and the placement of a stent to maintain proper blood flow. In addition to these interventions, Dr. Hacker may recommend anticoagulant medications to prevent future clots and compression stockings to manage symptoms. The goal is to restore normal blood flow, alleviate symptoms, and prevent long-term complications.
